MgMt - Loss of life Review

Release Date: February 23, 2024

I was beyond excited for MGMT’s first LP since 2018’s Little Dark Age. The lead single, Mother Nature, immediately set the tone—its dreamy, nostalgic sound felt like a natural evolution of their style and hinted at the direction they might take with the full album.

Loss of Life feels like the work of a duo that has grown and matured. The adolescent humor and playful absurdity found in their earlier releases are absent here, but that’s not a loss—it’s a natural progression. The album still carries MGMT’s unmistakable essence, wrapped in lush production, thoughtful songwriting, and captivating performances. Every aspect of it feels deliberate and beautifully crafted.

My only hesitation with this record isn’t about the music itself but the wait that may follow. If history is any indication, it could be a long time before we hear from MGMT again. Here’s hoping the next chapter doesn’t take too long to arrive.
